Airservices Australia invites community feedback on proposed Bankstown airspace changes

Airservices Australia is seeking community feedback on the proposed light aircraft corridor to the southeast of Bankstown Airport’s controlled airspace.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) proposal, made in conjunction with Airservices, is to reclassify a portion of airspace that would see general aviation pilots offered a more direct route to the south-east of Bankstown under a new airspace corridor in uncontrolled Class G airspace.

This proposed airspace change is aimed at ensuring continued safety by reducing aircraft congestion and providing more equitable access to airspace for these pilots as Sydney air traffic continues to grow.

The area in which the new corridor is proposed is currently overflown by aircraft operating from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Under the changes, residents within the corridor area may notice more light training and recreational aircraft operating at a lower altitude.

Residents can provide feedback until Tuesday, 22 October via communityengagement@airservicesaustralia.com. Airservices will conduct further community engagement on the final airspace design later in the year.

“Airservices Australia is committed to engaging with the community on the proposed changes to Bankstown airspace operations,” said Airservices’ Head of Community Engagement Donna Marshall.

“Our primary goal is to ensure all community members within the proposed corridor area are aware of the proposed changes and have the opportunity to provide feedback on any areas of interest.”

CASA is running a parallel consultation with the aviation industry and will consider all feedback, including community and industry, prior to making a decision.
