CASA Class 3 Medical

You will be required to obtain a Class 3 Medical Certificate in accordance with medical standards specified by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to work as a controller.

Please read Regulation 67.160 of Part 67 of the CASRs before lodging your application through . If you have any doubt about your ability to meet these medical standards, seek further information from CASA before you apply.

Please note:

  • any individuals who are unable to meet the prescribed medical standards for air traffic controllers will be ineligible to be issued with an air traffic control licence by CASA and will be ineligible for ATC training and/or employment with Airservices
  • if you have previously been rejected for initial issue of an air traffic control licence, had a licence suspended or cancelled, or had a certificate issued by CASA or Airservices Australia, you must speak to CASA prior to application.

Security clearance

You will also need to undergo a successful Police Records Check and obtain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).

These checks identify any past convictions, or present or pending criminal charges. If you have any doubts as to whether you will be able to satisfy this requirement you can either contact the Australian Federal Police or undertake your own criminal history check via the AFP’s application form.

Note: Applicants who are assessed as ‘unfavourably recorded’ will be ineligible for employment with Airservices.
