Airservices Australia celebrates International Day of the Air Traffic Controller

It’s a niche, high-pressure and dynamic role – and not one for the faint-hearted – but Airservices Australia’s 900-strong air traffic controller (ATC) workforce wouldn’t have it any other way.

Today, on International Day of the Air Traffic Controller (IDATC), we proudly honour our highly skilled, passionate and dedicated ATCs, who operate 24/7 to keep travellers safe.

Airservices’ ATCs manage the safe and orderly flow of aircraft into, out of, and between airports throughout Australia.

Did you know: As the nation’s air navigation service provider, our ATCs manage a whopping 11 per cent of the world’s airspace? This includes managing 3.9 million aircraft movements and 155 million passenger movements in FY2024.

In addition, our ATCs are not only based at Australia’s busiest 29 airport control towers – they also operate from two major centres in Melbourne and Brisbane and terminal control units in Sydney and Perth.

Airservices Chief Executive Officer Rob Sharp congratulated our ATC workforce for their outstanding service and commitment to excellence.

“Today, on International Day of the Air Traffic Controller, I want to send out a big thank you to our ATCs,” Mr Sharp said.

“We are proud of our world-class safety record and safety-first culture, with our ATCs among the world’s best.

“Our guardians of the Australian sky are the unsung heroes who safely and efficiently guide travellers from A to B, linking family and friends, generating economic activity, creating jobs and facilitating trade and tourism.”

Airservices is continuing to invest in our workforce across Australia, recruiting 109 controllers last year, with a further 85 expected to be endorsed in 2025 to add further resilience to our service.

Airservices is always on the lookout for new ATC talent. Apply now, via Air Traffic Control careers – Airservices.
