Airservices Australia will be participating in a full emergency management exercise “SYDEX18” at Sydney Airport today (23 August 2018) at midday as part of the Airport Emergency Plan (AEP).

This is an exercise only, there is no cause for concern or alarm.

The objectives of this exercise include:

  • Practice and evaluate the activation, notification and response to the AEP
  • Test and manage closing Sydney Airport airspace (notionally)
  • Evaluate the establishment and management of Site Control, the Forward Command Post and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)
  • Test communications:
    • Internal communications
    • External including information in the Public Domain
    • Between agencies
    • Media coordination and corporate communications
  • Practice the movement and marshalling from Gate 16 to the incident site and from the incident site to the International Terminal
  • Practice Investigation processes of ATSB

The exercise scenario involves Stellar Airways flight STL20, a B712 inbound to YSSY declaring a MAYDAY with an engine fire indicator warning. The aircraft subsequently crashes during the landing roll due to a failure of the landing gear and the aircraft veers off the runway.

This is an exercise only, there is no cause for concern or alarm.
