Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System
The Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) is being introduced at four of Australia’s busiest airports – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
A-SMGCS is an air traffic surveillance system that enables aircraft and vehicles on the airport surface to be accurately identified and tracked in all visibility conditions by air traffic control.
Benefits of the technology include better conflict detection by controllers, fewer runway incursions and a lower risk of surface collisions.
It will improve airport operations, particularly during reduced visibility conditions, at night, and where distances from control towers make visual contact difficult. It will also add to the controller’s situational awareness of movement area traffic by predicting any conflicts and providing visible and audible alerts.
