Flying Around - FAQ

What is Flying Around?

Flying Around is an interactive visual guide designed to assist with pilot education and familiarity with operations around controlled airspace. It provides pilots with information on ways to operate their flights in a safe and effective manner, thus reducing the likelihood of being involved in a Violation of Controlled Airspace (VCA).

Can I download to a PDA (i.e. a Pocket PC)?Can I print out a chart?

No. Flying Around is designed to be accessed via either a desktop or laptop/notebook computer. The amount of information being displayed does not suit the reduced viewing area a PDA provides. In addition, the Macromedia Flash player available for the Pocket PC is currently at version 6 (Flying Around requires Macromedia Flash Player 7).

Should I access the application in the cockpit during flight?

No. The application has been designed to assist in the pre-flight planning phase of a flight and not for use in the cockpit during flight.

Can I copy the program to CD-ROM?

No. The content provided must be as current as possible, and as such, is only available via a live internet connection. It is intended that the application accurately reflect and provide current information on the National Airspace System (NAS).

Can I print out a chart?

No. The charts used in Flying Around have been licensed especially for the application, and are not available for export from within the application.

They are available for purchase from the Airservices Australia online store at:
http://www.airservicesaustralia.com/store/avcharts.asp

What are the minimum specifications required to run the program?

The minimum specifications to effectively run this application are:-

• A PC, running Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP, MAC OSX, or LINUX
• A current web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer 6, Mozilla 1 or Netscape 7)
• Macromedia Flash Player 7 ( http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer/ )
• An active internet connection (Broadband preferred)

Why do the maps initially appear blurred?

Due to the large amount of data being downloaded for the locations, the initial map is a fast loading, low quality version. As the user zooms and moves around the map, higher quality sections will download and replace the original.

In addition, the application is designed to cache the map, and you should notice a considerable increase in access speeds during subsequent visits.
