Media Release - Airservices promotes aviation careers and skills at Avalon - 03/09

Airservices Australia is working to address industry-wide skills shortages by showcasing a range of aviation career opportunities at Avalon 2009.

Airservices has made a major commitment to the airshow’s aviation Careers and Skills program, aimed at educators, students and careers professionals.

The event will highlight opportunities in the aerospace, maritime and defence industries with a program of displays, briefings and presentations from Airservices and a host of its aviation partners.

CEO Greg Russell said Airservices’ ongoing commitment to career path development in the industry came at a significant time for the aviation community.

"We’re very pleased to have expanded our support of Australia’s premier airshow in this fashion. Promoting career options and attracting new entrants is critical to the future sustainability of the aviation industry," Mr Russell said.

Airservices’ own air traffic controllers, aviation rescue fire fighters and technical staff will present to students and industry groups throughout the program. More information about career prospects and opportunities will be available at the Airservices career stand in Exhibition Hall A.

Visitors to Avalon 09 will also have the opportunity to get their hands on everything from Airservices’ brand new ultra-large Mk8 fire trucks to a mock-up of an air traffic control simulator used to train the next generation of air traffic controllers at the Airservices Learning Academy in Melbourne.

"The simulators we use in our Learning Academy can replicate a variety of air traffic levels and weather conditions at Australian airports, this mock up will give the public a small taste of the challenging scenarios faced by the men and women providing the nation’s air navigation services," Mr Russell said.

In addition, Airservices will again provide world-class air traffic management and a range of other services including Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting at the airshow.
