Media Release - Airservices secures future of civil aviation history collection - 33/09
The future of one of Australia's largest collections of historically significant civil aviation equipment, records, films and photographs has been secured for another three years with the support of Airservices.
The Civil Aviation Historical Society preserves and records the history of Australia’s air navigation service provision (ANSP) organisations from the beginnings of civil aviation regulation in the early 1920s.
It operates Australia's only dedicated civil aviation museum, the Airways Museum, at Essendon Airport in Melbourne's northern suburbs.
Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said that as the nation’s current ANSP Airservices shared a proud history with agencies including the include the Civil Aviation Authority (not to be confused with the modern day Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or CASA) and Department of Civil Aviation, established in 1938.
"Together we've played a key role in the development of a mature and safe and aviation industry which makes a critical contribution to Australia’s economic development.
"Airservices is very pleased to support the efforts of the CAHS in providing Australians with a window into the leading role the country has played in aviation development,” Mr Walker said.
The Airways Museum houses a unique collection of preserved airways equipment including air traffic control, radio and flight service consoles, radio navigation aids and communications equipment.
The collection of over 1,000 items includes radio navigation aids which were developed in Australia mid-last century and later exported to the world.
"Much of this technology is still in use today but about to be superseded by the next generation of satellite surveillance and digital communication technology.
"It’s therefore vitally important we preserve this historical record of Australia's engineering and aviation ingenuity for future generations," Mr Walker said.
