Media Release - Scholarship winners learn to fly thanks to Airservices - 16/09
A new group of aviation enthusiasts will take to the sky to kick start possible careers as pilots with financial support from Airservices Australia.
The four pilots-to-be have won learn to fly scholarships offered in conjunction with the Royal Federation of Aero Clubs of Australia (RFACA).
The scholarships are aimed at generating interest in aviation as a career and identifying the next generation of pilots.
To enter, members of the public simply take an introductory flight with an RFACA member. They are assessed for their suitability to receive formal training, with the top ten per cent of applicants placed into a barrel draw.
Each winner receives $6,000 to subsidise the cost of obtaining a Private or Commercial Pilots’ Licence.
Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said the scholarships offered a terrific opportunity to showcase the industry and supported the sustainability of the general aviation community during a difficult time.
"We are very pleased to support the RFACA as a 'breeding ground' for the future of Australian aviation. It’s important we continue to promote entry paths into the industry during the current downturn,” Mr Walker said.
"Airservices congratulates all the winners, and encourages them to get started on their training and obtain a pilot’s licence,” he said.
Recipients of the RFACA and Airservices 2008 Learn to Fly Scholarships are:

- Samuel Simpson - Aero Club of Southern Tasmania, Hobart, TAS
