Satellite Transition 2008 Project
Airservices began its largest ever satellite re-point project in 2007. It involved making technical adjustments to 96 satellite dishes across the country.
The adjustments were critical to ensure the continued provision of air navigation surveillance services.
More than nine months of planning was needed to guarantee the uninterrupted provision of this critical service during the process.
A total of 33 technical field teams consisting of 227 personnel travelled some 64,260km of road (over 1.5 times the circumference of the earth) and thousands more kilometres by air.
Teams also faced challenges presented by the physical size and weight of the dishes - measuring from 2.4 to 7.2 metres in diameter – the demands of driving for extended periods and working in environmentally diverse conditions from snow to 45-degree heat.
The entire project was completed on time in just 12 days.
