Australia Day Medallions 2010
These awards recognise Airservices employees who have made outstanding contributions to the community.
Australia Day Achievement Medallions for 2010 were awarded to:
Rob Gasseling, Facilities Management Services (FMS), Melbourne
Support for disabled youth
Rob has been heavily involved in supporting young people who, through disability, are confined to a wheelchair. Rob's involvement started after his own son Glenn developed muscular dystrophy. Rob has served the community as a wheelchair games coach and volunteer carer at State and National level for many years.
Rob Merryweather, Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF), Melbourne
$150,000 for charity
Rob has worked tirelessly for over 18 years as a member of the Melbourne ARFF Station fundraising committee. To date, with the assistance of other fire fighters, family and friends, more than $150,000 has been raised for a variety of charities including the Royal Children's Hospital.
Derek Russell, Air Traffic Control Upper Airspace Services, Melbourne
Black Saturday bushfires
Derek and his wife Angela are long-time residents of the Whittlesea region in Victoria. After the Black Saturday bushfires in early 2009 they set up a practical support network to assist survivors over the months that followed. This included the collection and distribution of donated furniture as well as hosting a displaced family.
Clive Lee, Air Traffic Control, Cairns
Work with at-risk young people
Clive has has been involved with the Cairns Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) in a variety of roles for more than 12 years. His work helps mentor kids, especially those at risk, and gets them involved in a variety of activities to develop social skills and helps them avoid anti-social behaviours.
