Airservices is a government-owned corporation providing safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible services to the aviation industry. We manage air traffic operations for around 75 million passengers on more than three million flights every year.

The role of technical officers

The type of work completed by technical trainees can vary according to location and the area of the business.

Air Traffic Services Centres (ATSC)

If a trainee works in this area they would work predominantly with computer based systems used for air traffic control. The types of equipment worked on includes; radar display processing systems, voice switching equipment, user workstations, small systems servers and displays, remote facilities monitoring and control equipment, remote facilities interface equipment. The types of tasks would be: scheduled maintenance, equipment performance testing, corrective maintenance, spares and test equipment logistics, software upgrade and data maintenance, equipment modifications.

ATSC positions are based in Brisbane or Melbourne Centre, with similar but smaller systems deployment at the terminal control unit facilities at Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Cairns.

Communication/navigation/surveillance

Technical trainee positions in this skill steam would work with a variety of airways telecommunications equipment, navigation facilities and surveillance (radar) facilities. The work involves local and remotely based facilities that support air traffic control and air navigation services.

The types of equipment include HF and VHF transmitters and receivers, audio control and monitoring systems, bearer systems, satellite and terrestrial, navigation aids and radar systems.

The work would involve some travel (no more than two weeks at a time) to maintain equipment in more regional areas.

Central Module Repair Depot (CMRD)

Technical trainees in this area undertake development in the specialised repair of electronic assemblies pertaining to navigation equipment, radar sensors and communications equipment. The work requires competent diagnostics skills, advanced soldering techniques, and ability to use specialised test and measuring equipment. The work is conducted at the repair centre that is located in Melbourne.

Test Equipment Maintenance and Calibration Centre (TEMACC)

TEMACC is located in Brisbane. It provides calibration, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of test equipment used in civil aviation. TEMACC uses comprehensive calibration tools and has NATA accreditation as a test laboratory. Trainees undertake a specialised development program in the knowledge and skills necessary to calibrate and repair the specialised test equipment that is used in support of airways systems maintenance.
