What is RNP?
RNP (Required Navigation Performance) is a way of defining the navigation capability of an aircraft, taking into account the performance of the avionics, on-board systems and flight characteristics.
- RNP uses the aircraft’s Flight Management System to integrate numerous sources of position data.
- RNP allows air traffic controllers to plan approach paths that manoeuvre the aircraft around obstacles and restricted or built up areas.
- This can result in a shorter approach when compared to the conventional procedure.
RNP capability is usually certified by the manufacture of the aircraft at the time of production however older aircraft can also be upgraded. It is quickly becoming a standard feature of modern aircraft.
RNP is a level of navigation performance expressed in nautical miles. The RNP defines the width of the airspace corridor required for the procedure.
