Monitoring Australia’s Airspace

RadarsWe monitor all aviation traffic in Australia's delegated airspace which is called the Australian Flight Information Region and covers 11% of the world’s surface.

Aircraft are tracked by a network of radars. Additional information about aircraft outside of the radar coverage areas is drawn from flight plans, or by aircraft reporting their position from the satellite navigation system. These are added together to form one picture by our Air Traffic Management System.

This information is also used for many purposes, for example, to predict the arrival of aircraft at a particular airport. With a precise estimate of when the plane is going to arrive it is possible to avoid delays at the airport. This saves fuel and reduces emissions.
