Airservices provides aviation rescue and fire fighting (ARFF) services at 26 of Australia’s busiest regional, domestic and international airports. The service operates the largest fire fighting vehicles in Australia— ultra-large, high visibility Mk8 fire vehicles.
Aviation fire fighters respond to a host of different incidents every day ranging from medical emergencies to fire alarms.
Aviation fire fighters respond within three minutes to an aircraft accident or incident at or within 1500 m of an airport, where they will take command as first responders. Local emergency services will be called out to assist if required. Airservices also operates a water rescue capability (including boats and life rafts) at airports located close to water.
At airports without a dedicated ARFF service, or where an accident occurs more than 1500 m from an airport perimeter, local emergency services will take the lead.
