Rockhampton Tower

Tower Information, Views and History

Location - Rockhampton Airport, Rockhampton, Queensland

Postal Address - PO Box 4064, Rockhampton, QLD 4700

Height - 12m

Date Constructed - 1958

1958 was the commissioning year for the Control Tower located over the recently renovated " old terminal " complex sited adjacent to the main terminal apron. Time will tell if we see 2008 and 50 years of service from this well placed concrete, steel and double glazed structure that services airspace within 22nm radius and 4500ft (1500m) of Rockhampton.

Typical average daily movements vary between 80 and 120. 10% of movements are military activities associated with exercises into Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area with USA, Canadian, NZ, Singaporean and Australian Forces.

Floor space in the tower cab is functional for two people and recent technology requirements has introduced innovated solutions for the presentation of PC screens, FAX and Printers as well as the TSAD (nee radar) display.

Views from the tower are punctuated by numerous obstructions including apron light towers, a communication tower, security lighting and buildings. Accessibility to the main apron allows frequent visits to the tower, by flight crews during longer stopovers.

Geographically to the North thru East overlooks suburban Rockhampton and the range of mountains known locally as The Berserkers. Continuing South down and across the Yeppen Flood Plain to Mount Morgan and the Dee Range. West thru to North views are over low hills to the Boomer Range, spotted with cattle and lagoons with birdlife in abundance. The western facing aspect of the tower allows appreciative views of our numerous sunsets.
