Melbourne Airport is located about 20 NW of the Melbourne CBD. It was built outside the metropolitan area in the late 1960's to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Visible from the tower are the Dandenong ranges in Melbourne's east , Port Phillip Bay, the You Yangs to the south west ,Mt. Macedon to the North west, and panorama of the city skyline.
The tower is situated in the south west corner of the airport approximately 600 m west of Rwy 34. The cabin is 120 feet off the ground (situated in a hollow it is only 80 feet above the Aerodrome reference point). A five person console including three Eurocat displays are provided. A staff of 27 operates the tower 24 hours a day 7 days a week with no curfew.
As at June 2005 Melbourne had approximately 525 movements per day. The daily tonnage landed at Melbourne is approximately 215,000 tons.
The ARFF ( Aviation Rescue & Fire Fighting ) is represented on the airport with two fire stations and a training facility.
Facilities
Melbourne has two runways ---16/34 3657 m long and 27/09 2286 m long. Runways 16 and 27 are served by Cat 1 ILS approaches, and VOR/DME approaches are available to all runways. It has over 50 domestic and 12 international parking bays and a freight apron for 3 wide bodies.
