The control tower is situated on a hill on the western side of the runway. This enables the tower to also provide a service to Cambridge aerodrome which is located some two kilometres to the west of Hobart aerodrome. The service provided to Cambridge is essentially as per Hobart, as the circuits overlap.
The tower overlooks Pitt Water and Nelsons Tier to the North East, Frederick Henry Bay and the Tasmanian Peninsula to the South East. To the west is the Meehan Range with MT Wellington in the background.
Hobart Airport is located 8.5 NM east of Hobart City on the edge of Frederick Henry Bay.
As the airport is located on the edge of the bay it is subject to strong sea breezes in summer. The latitude of Tasmania together with the mountainous terrain mean that for much of the year Hobart can be subject to strong westerly winds with the resultant mountain wave turbulence.
The surrounding terrain has resulted in MSA's of between 3300 and 5500FT. No IFR circling is allowed to the west of 12/30 for Hobart traffic, and special IFR procedures apply to approved operators for IFR operations at Cambridge.
Average movements per day for Hobart and Cambridge combined are 150. The majority of the Hobart traffic is RPT between 7000 and 136,000KG, whereas the Cambridge traffic is mostly GA flying training and private flying. Organisations operating out of Hobart /Cambridge include RPT, General Charter (fixed wing and rotary) Flying Schools (fixed wing and rotary), an Aero Club and privately owned aircraft
