The average daily movements are approximately 200 to 250 a day, but this can vary enormously. About 20% of the movements are medium and heavy RPT. There are 4 flying training schools at Coolangatta. There is a curfew that prohibits movements of aircraft above 34,000kg between the hours of 2300 and 0600 (Queensland time)

Coolangatta Airport is located at the southern end of the Gold Coast just west of the Gold Coast Highway adjacent to Bilinga Beach, only 3km from Kirra.

Views from the tower include the surf breaking over Schnapper Rocks at Greenmount to the Southeast. Whales migrating north abeam the airport to the east. Currumbin Hill and Surfers Paradise highrise and the sandhills of North and South Stradbroke Island to the north. Mt Springbrook and Mt Warning, the remnants of the volcano that formed the rainforested valleys, to the west and southwest.

Facilities

Coolangatta’s main runway is 32/14. Runway 17/35 is used mainly for light and some medium aircraft. Coolangatta is served by non-precision approaches serviced by VOR, NDB and DME.
