Canberra Airport is located in the ACT approx 5km east of Civic, 8km northwest of Queanbeyan, NSW and handy to Fyshwick. To the west of Canberra are the picturesque Brindabella Ranges which are snow-capped in winter and on fire in summer.
The control tower is sited inside the airport perimeter on the RAAF base 700m northeast of the runway intersection. The height of the tower is 30ft AGL.
Movements average around 95,000 for Canberra. These consist mainly of a mix of RPT and GA traffic. Australia’s VIP fleet is based at Canberra, as well as two fixed-wing flying schools and one helicopter flying school.
There is a wide mix of traffic ranging from training Cessna 152 to Military transports, jet fighters and the occasional VIP Boeing 747. The average daily movement rate is about 320. The airport is open 24 hours a day with no curfew. All of Canberra and Queanbeyan suburban areas are noise abated.
Facilities
Canberra’s runways are 12/30 and 17/35. There is an ILS installed on Runway 35. The other runways are served by non-precision approaches served by VOR, NDB and DME. There is also a GPS approach.
