Cairns Airport is situated on the coastal flats approximately 5 kms north of the CBD. The airport is surrounded by high terrain from the SE through the West to the NW with Lumley Hill 1km due west of Rwy 15/33 (height 1120ft).
Cairns enjoys a full range of traffic from a DH82 through to a B744. Cairns does not have a secondary aerodrome situated nearby and accommodates local fixed and rotary flying training. Annual movements range between 93,000 and 103,000, including heavy traffic (approximately 7%) and medium traffic (25%). No curfew exists.
Construction on the Tower commenced on the 19th July 1989 and the complex was commissioned on the 30th July 1990.
The view to the North takes in Cape Tribulation and Double Island through to the Green Island to the east. Views of Cairns CBD, Mt Bartle Frere through to the costal escarpment and the Baron Gorge.
Facilities
Cairns aerodrome is serviced by 2 runways --- Rwy 15/33 (3196m) and Rwy 12/30 (925m). Precision approaches exist to Rwy15 (ILS) and Rwy33 (LLZ/DME). Other non-precision approaches are also available: VOR, DME, NDB and GPS.
