In the early 1930's, Archerfield became the main airport for Brisbane and Qantas operations were transferred to Archerfield from Eagle Farm. The Terminal building was constructed during the 1930's and contained from the commencement of its operations the Brisbane Aeradio service.
In the late 1940's, regular public transport operations were transferred from Archerfield to Eagle Farm which had been developed considerably by the USAAF during the war and Archerfield adopted its current role as the main general aviation airport for Brisbane.
Archerfield Airport is situated on the south side of Brisbane in a flat, predominantly industrial area. Some residential development exists on the south eastern boundary of the airfield.
The average annual movements are approximately 200,000. Most of the traffic is in the light weight category, with an occasional medium operation. There are nine fixed wing and helicopter flight schools on the airfield. Most of the Archerfield movements are either solo or dual training sorties.
Facilities
Archerfield has two sets of parallel runways – 10/28 (sealed) and 04/22 (grass). An NDB is situated outside the eastern boundary of the airfield. A Radar One and Radar Two approach using the NDB plus a Runway 28 GPS and a twin NDB approach from Brisbane are available.
