Chairman’s Awards for Professional Excellence 2011
The Chairman’s Award for Professional Excellence acknowledges employees who have made an exceptional contribution beyond their normal duties to their work and to the organisation.
The Awards are presented at Airservices annual industry conference, Waypoint, across five categories. A CEO Commendation is also presented.
Air Environment Management
Tim Rees, seconded to Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO)
Tim has been seconded to CANSO as a program manager for the Environment Work Group since December 2009. Tim has approached this role with outstanding passion and enthusiasm and fantastic feedback is being received from all over the world in relation to Tim’s contribution to the group’s success.
In addition to this Tim is proactively using the knowledge and experience he is gaining to drive learnings back into Airservices, thereby ensuring Airservices is well placed to manage these emerging issues into the future.
Air Safety Management
Rob Butcher, Operational Analysis Manager
Rob has been supporting the work of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Separation and Airspace Safety Panel and the Asia Pacific Regional Airspace Safety Monitoring Advisory Group for many years. Rob has championed specific outcomes, the most recent being the development of separation minima for use in terminal airspace based on performance based navigation.
Rob also manages the work undertaken by the Australian Airspace Monitoring Agency and has expanded the role to including monitoring of risk in Indonesian and PNG airspace.
Air Traffic Control
Mike Lockwood, Continuous Service Improvement Officer
Mike manages a national program for ensuring standardisation and consistency of standards, systems and service delivery in the radar towers environment. Over the last 12 months, Mike has implemented a number of procedural improvements as well as ensuring standardisation of practices supporting the rollout of the national tower technology project.
Mike also recently represented Airservices as part of the Indonesian Transports Safety Assistance Program (ITSAP) and was responsible for the safe provision of ATC services during Avalon Airshow.
Engineering
David Schoemaker, Program Director Communications
David was responsible for the delivery of the most significant communication infrastructure upgrade undertaken by Airservices, the Telecommunications Infrastructure Network Replacement (TINR) project. David showed leadership, commitment and technical skills in delivering the upgrade to 200 remote sites and worked with a multitude of internal and external stakeholders.
David has also been involved in the delivery of other projects including the VHF System Upgrade Project and ADS-B Upper Airspace project.
Greg Dunstone, Senior Engineering Specialist
Greg is a 40-year veteran of Airservices and was the driving force behind the successful deployment of ADS-B technology in Australia. Greg led Airservices ADS-B initiatives since the first trial in 2000 and his work in this area has seen him appointed to a number of committees planning the introduction of ADS-B around the world.
Greg was also recently awarded with the prestigious Lawrence Hargrave Award for 2011 by the Royal Aeronautical Society.
Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting
Mark von Nida, Superintendent, ARFF
Mark was nominated for his work with Compartment Fire Behaviour Training which is being implemented throughout ARFF and will help to protect fire fighters by providing them with the knowledge and skills to identify and control situations of rapid fire progression.
The introduction of Compartment Fire Behaviour Training involves placing fire fighters in a controlled environment where fire behaviours associated with back draft and flash over can occur safely. Mark’s enthusiasm and dedication to this project has been instrumental in its introduction into the ARFF training continuum.
CEO Commendation
International Relations leadership team – Katrin Hewitt, Phil Irvine and Ben Wilson
The team was nominated for their commitment, expertise and efforts in re-aligning Airservices international activities program from one based on a commercial revenue criteria to a program that focused on enhancing aviation safety in the Asia/Pacific region.
The team is highly professionalism and committed to enhancing in-country relationships in PNG and Indonesia and delivering Australia aid funded projects.
